On 12 February, while checking in luggage for Spain at the airport in Wrocław, a 51-year-old Polish man told staff that there was a bomb in his suitcase. – The appropriate security procedures were immediately initiated, and officers from the Border Guard Special Intervention Team were dispatched to the scene – reports Senior Warrant Officer Małgorzata PotocznaMałgorzata Potoczna from the Press Team of the Commander of the Nadodrzański Border Guard Unit.

She adds: – After a thorough inspection of the luggage, the threat was ruled out – the suitcase proved to be safe. The man, however, explained to the officers that his words had only been a joke. As he quickly found out, there is no room for this kind of “joke” at an airport.

The man was fined for making a false alarm. However, that was not the end of his problems.

Senior Warrant Officer M. Potoczna:

During routine checks, it turned out that the 51-year-old was wanted to be arrested and brought to a correctional facility. He was to serve a 100-day prison sentence for failing to comply with criminal measures imposed by the court.

The outcome? Instead of flying to Spain, the man was taken to prison, where he will serve his sentence.

The officers conclude: – This situation is another example of how irresponsible behavior at an airport can have serious consequences, far more serious than simply losing a holiday trip.
