Thursday’s Lotto draw brought huge excitement to players in Lower Silesia. One of the two top prizes in the country was won in Raciborowice Górne. The lucky ticket was purchased at the LOTTO outlet at Raciborowice Górne 143, and its owner became richer by exactly PLN 2,649,495.
The winner used the “quick pick” option, leaving the choice of numbers to chance. As it turned out, it was a decision that brought a life-changing win. The lucky numbers in the Lotto draw on 29 January were: 2, 6, 12, 24, 31, 36.
This is the highest prize ever won in Raciborowice Górne. The locality has thus joined the group of places where million-zloty Lotto prizes have been won.
That same day, luck also smiled on a player in Gryfów Śląski, where a “six” worth PLN 1,000,000 was won in Lotto Plus. Both major prizes were won in Lower Silesian Voivodeship.
Totalizator Sportowy reminds players that a 10-percent tax is charged on every prize above PLN 2,280. Even so, the winner from Raciborowice Górne can enjoy an amount that significantly changes everyday life.
A six in Lotto is extremely rare. What do the statistics say?
Although stories about million-zloty prizes capture the imagination, the statistics are unforgiving for players. The probability of hitting a “six” in Lotto is 1 in 13,983,816. This means that, statistically, one person out of almost 14 million tickets has a chance of winning the top prize.
By comparison, the probability of hitting five, four or three numbers is much higher, but these prizes are incomparably smaller and often do not even cover the long-term costs of playing.
Experts have stressed for years that Lotto and other number games should be treated solely as entertainment, not as a realistic way to improve one’s financial situation.
Playing every day? The calculation can be unforgiving
A single Lotto ticket currently costs PLN 3. For many people, this is a small amount that “makes no difference.” The problem begins when playing becomes a daily habit.
Example:
- 1 ticket a day → approx. PLN 90 per month
- 2 tickets a day → approx. PLN 180 per month
- over a year → as much as more than PLN 2,000
Over the course of a year, this money could be allocated to real savings, paying off debts or other goals. Statistically, the vast majority of players over the years pay in more than they ever win.
Why do we play anyway?
Psychologists point to the so-called availability heuristic—individual stories about million-zloty wins receive publicity, while millions of losing tickets remain unseen. This creates the illusion that “someone succeeded, so maybe I can too.”
In addition, even small wins reinforce the desire to keep playing, although in reality they do not change the mathematical odds.
A win is luck, not a strategy
Hitting a “six”—as in Raciborowice Górne—is an exceptional event worth noting. At the same time, the statistics clearly show that it is pure chance, not the result of systematic playing or a “good feeling.”
Specialists emphasize one point: if someone decides to play, they should do so occasionally, with full awareness of the risk and without believing that it is an investment.
Because although luck sometimes smiles, mathematics almost always remains unforgiving.
