The matter was reported to us by a reader, a passenger in the car that was nearly hit by the driver of a black, three-door Hyundai.
– On Sunday I was driving with my boyfriend to Dąbrowa when a black car came around a sharp bend from the opposite direction – the young woman recounts. – It was driving straight at us at high speed. My boyfriend swerved right and stopped on the roadside. It was only thanks to the trees growing there that our car did not slide down the embankment.
The Hyundai driver went off the road and stopped in a shallow ditch. Passing cyclists witnessed the incident and stopped when they heard the screech of tires. The young woman says that one of them began talking to the road offenders.
– When I got out of the car, I saw that a man on a bicycle had stopped beside the Hyundai, from which a passenger had gotten out – the reader recounts. – He was a young man in his twenties. He asked the cyclist to help him push the car out. I heard the cyclist say: “You’re drunk; you shouldn’t get behind the wheel at all.” He was probably speaking to the passenger. But in my opinion, the driver was drunk too.
The reader says that a heated exchange took place between the cyclist and the Hyundai passenger, who was probably drunk. – There were a few words beginning with “f” – the young woman says. – In the end, the cyclist threatened to call the police, which calmed the young man down. I decided to notify the police too. But it took a while.
The young woman says that the 997 number was busy for a long time. As she puts it, it took a good five minutes to reach the police. Eventually, she got through. Her boyfriend pulled away from the roadside and drove a little farther. They had to turn back because they wanted to wait for the police car at the scene.
– By the time we had notified the police and returned to the same place, the Hyundai was gone – the young woman says. – Someone must have helped them push the car out. We decided to follow them, or rather to drive in the direction in which they must have left. We found them in the parking lot by Biedronka in Dolne Młyny. There was still grass on the hood. A police car also passed us. I hoped they would catch them.
We asked police spokesperson Adriana Szajwaj whether the police had detained the Hyundai driver.
– Indeed, we received such a report on Sunday at around 7:00 p.m. – Szajwaj says. – A police car was immediately sent to the scene. A total of three patrols took part in the search. But it was not possible to find the car. It is a shame that the reporting party did not call us again and tell us where they had found the car that had nearly hit them.
Adriana Szajwaj advises people to remember as many details as possible in cases such as the one described: the vehicle’s registration number, color and make, as well as the appearance of the driver and passengers.
– Every report is checked, and there are cases where, following such a report, we detain a driver who posed a danger on the road – the spokesperson says. – During the summer season, intensified checks are also carried out around bathing areas. More people, including many children, are present there at that time, and drunk drivers or those driving at prohibited speeds are particularly dangerous to them.
