A man reported to the County Police Headquarters in Lubań after falling victim to a new scam method. – A courier knocked on the door of a resident of Lubań County with a cash-on-delivery parcel that had to be paid for in the amount of PLN 220 – reports Sub-Inspector Justyna Bujakiewicz-Rodzeń, press officer of the local County Police Headquarters.
She adds: – The parcel was addressed to the victim’s mother.
After the parcel was paid for, it turned out that it contained a used electric shaver that… no one in the household had ordered.
Police urge people to exercise caution when receiving cash-on-delivery parcels, especially if they are not expecting one or if it is addressed to another member of the household.
How can you avoid being scammed?
- Before accepting and paying for a cash-on-delivery parcel, make sure that someone actually ordered it.
- If you have any doubts, contact the members of your household by phone or check your order history in shopping apps.
- Do not give in to time pressure. The courier is required to wait a few moments.
- If the parcel seems suspicious, refuse to accept it.
- Be particularly vigilant when the cash-on-delivery amount is, as in this case, PLN 199.
What should you do if you have fallen victim to a criminal?
- Notify the Police immediately.
- Keep the parcel you received, including its label.
- Provide officers with all information concerning the receipt of the parcel and the circumstances of the incident.
- Contact the courier company to block the transferred funds.
Officers: – Let us be cautious and remember that scammers constantly modify their methods, counting on recipients’ inattention. Vigilance and a quick response can prevent further crimes. If you have any doubts about a parcel or suspect that someone may have been scammed in this way, inform the Police.
