As reported today by the 10th Armored Cavalry Brigade in Świętoszów:
At #10BKPanc the final blood donation drive of the year took place. Many of us decided to join the drive and help those in need.
Blood donation drives are extremely important for several key reasons – medical, social and ethical alike:
🩸 1. Blood saves lives
This is the most important point. Blood is essential in emergencies:
- accidents and injuries,
- surgical operations,
- complicated childbirth,
- cancer treatment,
- blood diseases (e.g. aplastic anemia, hemophilia).
It cannot be manufactured synthetically – another human being is its only source.
🏥 2. Ensuring continuity of treatment
Hospitals need steady blood supplies because its components have different and relatively short shelf lives:
- platelets – approx. 5–7 days,
- red blood cells – approx. 42 days,
- plasma – up to a year (frozen).
That is why regular drives are needed, rather than one-off efforts.
🫂 3. Solidarity and social responsibility
Donating blood is a form of real help for other people – at no cost, but of enormous value. It helps build a responsible and empathetic community.
🧬 4. Rare blood types are worth their weight in gold
Some blood types (e.g. O Rh−) are particularly valuable because they can be used universally – shortages can paralyze hospital operations.
🩹 5. Donors benefit too
Blood donors receive:
- free tests (complete blood count, blood type, virological tests),
- tax relief and honorary badges (in Poland),
- satisfaction and the feeling of providing real help.
💉 6. Drives raise awareness
Organized campaigns and mobile collection points make blood donation more accessible and provide information about who can donate blood and how. This increases the number of donors.
