On Saturday, 25 October, an event organized by St. Łukasz Hospital took place in the gymnasium of I LO in Bolesławiec. The organizer was the hospital’s affiliated Wspierajmy Zdrowie foundation. Alcohol was served during the event in the form of drinks with names referring to medical situations, such as “Stat!”, “Resuscitation”, “Oxygen saturation”, “Death” and “Emergency duty”.

The gala took place on school grounds, in a building adjacent to the facilities of the educational centre and the secondary school. Under the Act on Upbringing in Sobriety, the sale, serving and consumption of alcohol are prohibited on school premises. We asked the head of the institution whether alcohol could be served during events organized in the sports hall of I Liceum Ogólnokształcące and, if so, what rules applied.

Below is the response from principal Cezary Czernatowicz:

After the lease agreement for the premises in the sports hall at I Liceum Ogólnokształcące in Bolesławiec is signed, responsibility for organizing the event rests with the tenant.

We did not receive an answer as to whether alcohol could be served in the school hall, so we assume that it is prohibited.

We also asked how long before Saturday’s gala the hall had been taken out of use. Comments under the article Alcohol at a gala in the school hall. Controversy after St. Łukasz Hospital event included claims that students had been unable to use the hall for several days.

Principal Cetnarowicz confirmed that the hall had been unavailable to students.

On Thursday, 23 October, and Friday, 24 October, scheduled physical education classes were held on the school sports field, in the school assembly hall or in other school rooms.

We are still awaiting a response from the Wspierajmy Zdrowie Foundation to the following questions:

  • what was the legal basis and what permits were obtained for serving alcohol on school premises?
  • who purchased the alcohol that was served free of charge?
  • did the Foundation obtain the consent of the school principal or the governing body to organize the event in this form?
  • who was responsible for preparing the drink names?

Foundation president Jolanta Sawczak remains silent.
