Last weekend, the section of road in Jakuszyce—from Babiniec to the border with the Czech Republic—was completely impassable for vehicles. As reported by the Jelenia Góra police, the situation was caused by heavy snowfall and difficult weather conditions, which quickly led to a significant deterioration in passability.

Police officers intervened at the scene. Heavy goods vehicles were directed to the car park by the Piastów inn, on National Road 5 (DK5), where they waited for road services responsible for clearing the snow and reopening the route.

The police appealed to drivers to avoid travelling towards Jakuszyce and the Czech border until conditions improved and traffic resumed. Drivers were advised to use detours and follow road traffic announcements.

Winter is getting closer. Police urge caution

In the event of deteriorating weather conditions—snowfall or sleet—drivers should adjust their speed to the road conditions and exercise particular caution.

Many vehicles are still travelling on summer tyres, which significantly complicates driving on snowy and icy surfaces.

The police remind drivers: do not set off into the mountains by car without winter tyres and proper vehicle preparation.
