During the City Council session held on Wednesday, 27 April, Bolesławiec mayor Piotr Roman informed the councillors that the current tenant would no longer run the Starówka restaurant. The Savanna pizzeria, currently located in the town hall, is to move into the premises. A Customer Service Point is to be established where Savanna currently operates.
Wojciech Kasprzyk, a Civic Platform councillor, joined the discussion. “I am opposed to closing Savanna,” he said. “This restaurant has a history. I really like this place and visit it often. Bolesławiec Market Square is not being developed appropriately. Three-quarters of the premises are banks and shoe shops. There will be a lack of meeting places here.”
“We have been struggling with the decision concerning Savanna for eight years,” Piotr Roman stressed. “Previously I said: no pasaran. I was afraid that we would eliminate one workplace. Now the tenant of Starówka is giving up running it of their own accord. They are giving it up because turnover there is low. If I wanted to be malicious, I would ask when the councillor was last at Starówka. I have visited that restaurant several times recently. Once, I was its only customer. If people were more willing to use the establishments in the Market Square, no one would give them up.”
“I understand the sentimental attachment to Savanna,” the mayor continued. “However, we have no other place in the town hall where we could open a Customer Service Point. This is a carefully considered decision. We are doing this at the request of Bolesławiec residents, especially elderly people who have difficulty walking and people with disabilities. The cost of installing a lift in the town hall is beyond our means,” he added. “The municipal office is for applicants, not restaurants. All visitors should be able to make payments at the town hall,” concluded Janina Piestrak-Babijczuk, deputy head of the City Council.
