From a resident of Bolesławiec we received a report that one hot day she wanted to sit on a bench by the pond and rest. Unfortunately, there were pigeon droppings on the benches, and the high temperature made the smell of their droppings particularly troublesome.

Do municipal services notice the problem of the growing number of pigeons by the municipal pond and the problem of their droppings? Will they clean up the benches around the pond? – the reader asked.

We asked Miejski Zakład Gospodarki Mieszkaniowej for comment on the matter. Here is the response:

In response to the media inquiry concerning the presence of pigeons by the municipal pond, I would kindly inform you that these birds have been a natural element of the urban landscape for many years and are part of everyday life in the park. This place is willingly visited by residents, including families with children, who often feed the birds – including pigeons – treating it as a form of contact with nature. It is worth noting that feeding birds bread is harmful and should not be practiced. Bread can cause health problems in birds, including stomach acidosis and diarrhea. Bread quickly becomes moldy and can lead to illnesses, as well as disrupt the birds’ natural diet. Regular feeding leads to an increase in the number of pigeons in this area, resulting in greater pollution of public spaces, especially benches and the surfaces in their immediate vicinity. For this reason, we appeal to residents to take a sensible approach to feeding birds and avoid leaving excess food that attracts pigeons.

The area around the municipal pond is monitored by municipal services and regularly cleaned. The benches are washed.

Thank you for the report, and we assure you that we are taking action to ensure that the area around the pond remains a well-maintained, safe and welcoming place for all residents.
