On 16 June—as announced by Zgorzelec Mayor Rafał Gronicz—the Complaint to the European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration of the European Commission concerning the border controls maintained unilaterally by the Federal Republic of Germany

was made available at the Customer Service Point of the Zgorzelec City Hall.

Zgorzelec City Hall:

Hours-long traffic jams, limited access to jobs, education and public services on both sides of the border, as well as growing disruption to social and economic life—these are the main reasons for undertaking this initiative. The complaint aims to draw the European Commission’s attention to violations of the principles of the free movement of people within the Schengen Area and to point out the urgent need for corrective action that will restore balance to the everyday functioning of border communities.

Signature collection has begun

That is not all. Alongside making the complaint available, the City of Zgorzelec is beginning the formal collection of signatures from residents of Zgorzelec, Zgorzelec County, Görlitz and everyone who is dissatisfied with the situation in the border region. The office says:

Attention! Anyone wishing to support the Zgorzelec local government can read the complaint and sign the supporting list at the Customer Service Point of the Zgorzelec City Hall (7 Domańskiego Street) during office hours.

It adds: “In the coming days, additional signature collection points are also planned, including on the German side—in Görlitz. We will provide ongoing information about the exact locations.

It also emphasizes:

Collecting as many signatures as possible is crucial—the complaint is being submitted not only as a formal official letter, but also as the collective voice of the region’s residents, whose everyday lives have been seriously disrupted by the introduction of unilateral border controls.
