Golden chanterelles appear in forests earlier than false chanterelles. They can be found as early as late spring. False chanterelles appear at the beginning of autumn. Golden chanterelles usually have a more massive (thicker) stem. The ridges (false gills) beneath the chanterelle cap extend down the stem. In false chanterelles, there are dense gills beneath the cap that do not extend down the stem.
