The incident occurred on May 24, 2025, before 4:00 p.m. – Police officers from the Municipal Police Headquarters in Legnica received a report of a citizen’s arrest of an intoxicated driver at the exit from the A4 motorway toward Wrocław. Thanks to the immediate reaction of a witness who was driving a vehicle, it was possible to stop him and prevent a potential tragedy on the road – reports junior warrant officer Anna Tersa from the Legnica Municipal Police Headquarters.
The witness, who noticed the Volkswagen driver in a car park by the motorway, smelled alcohol on him. He reacted when the man got into the vehicle and continued driving. The spokesperson: – The witness immediately informed police officers about the entire incident and followed the intoxicated driver, intending to stop him. At one point, the Volkswagen driver exited at the Legnica junction, where he was apprehended by the witness, who prevented him from driving any further until a police patrol arrived.
At the scene, police officers tested the driver’s sobriety; the test showed more than 2 per mille of alcohol in his exhaled air. The man’s driving licence was confiscated, and the vehicle was removed by a roadside assistance service. The offence carries a sentence of up to 3 years in prison, loss of the driving licence and a heavy fine.

Thanks to the witness’s decisive and responsible reaction, it was possible to stop the intoxicated driver, whose behaviour posed a serious threat to other road users. This attitude is an example of how important cooperation between citizens and the Police is in ensuring safety on our roads.
