European Immunization Week is an annual campaign organized by the World Health Organization (WHO), held in the last week of April—from April 27 to May 3 this year. The aim of this initiative is to remind us how important a role vaccinations play in preventing infectious diseases and protecting our health.
The slogan of this year's campaign is “Prevent. Protect. Immunize.” Its main message emphasizes that everyone—regardless of their place of residence or life situation—should have equal access to vaccinations. Only then can society as a whole be effectively protected against outbreaks of epidemics—now and in the future.
Thanks to vaccinations, as many as 154 million lives have been saved over the past 50 years. It is the most effective way to protect yourself and others against dangerous diseases. It is important to vaccinate not only children, but also adults and older people, who become increasingly susceptible to various infections with age.
In Poland, as many as 95% of parents choose to have their children vaccinated in accordance with the mandatory vaccination schedule—a very good result that helps maintain so-called herd immunity. The situation is also improving worldwide—in many countries, more than 90% of children are vaccinated against the most dangerous diseases.
Remember: vaccination is an investment in the health of you, your loved ones and the entire community.
