The so-called “new authorities from the people,” taking over power—probably with the support of Western money and advisers—quickly learned their lesson. The world has strongly emphasized, and continues to emphasize, the phenomenon of Poles in overthrowing the socialist system. This phenomenon consisted in Poles’ ability to unite in the face of a system of oppression.
Killing the Phenomenon of Polish Freedom
Something had to be done with this phenomenon in order to destroy it. New products from the “wonderful” West quickly entered the market, and the borders were gradually opened. The search began for the enemy of the people and for those responsible for 50 years of oppression. Russia began to recede into the background, while a domestic enemy came to the fore: the communist, the leftist, the Jew. No one mentioned the actual perpetrators of the misfortune of Central and Eastern Europe. It was the Polish authorities that murdered: SB, MO, ZOMO, ORMO, and so on. New services were established, except that they were the same ones under different names.
Domestic Enemies
Writers, poets, painters, scientists, urban planners and others gradually became enemies of the people. Entire generations living under Soviet rule became, in propaganda, the perpetrators of the socialist system. No attention was paid to society’s comments that the perpetrators of the Soviet annexation were the betrayal of wartime allies. The impression was created that the post-war generations bore the blame for socialism. England, the USA, Germany and Russia were the good ones. Their own people, meanwhile, were bad.
As a reminder from history, when asked during the trial in Nuremberg how the Germans had made society so obedient, Hermann Göring replied that it was simple and could be done in any social system. It was enough to find a way to intimidate society, and then one could do whatever one wanted with it. I read this a long time ago and may not be exact, but this kind of social engineering effectively divided the Poles.
Let Us Continue to Be Afraid
In these circumstances, all that remains is to maintain divisions and social fears in order to effectively control public sentiment. Radio Maryja, Telewizja Trwam and others emerged, subtly sowing uncertainty and stoking fears by linking them to religion and the appearance of an attack on the Church. Ordinary people, who have no means of verifying information and are accustomed to “media truth,” quickly fell into a state of fear and began feeding on false, manipulated information. They quickly fell into the snares of self-interested political factions. Professional services composed of experienced and dedicated officers were disarmed, with these people being subjected to lynching and brought to the bottom of society. The personnel of the services was gradually replaced with new people—loyal officers—not necessarily competent.
After the efforts to replace the services, it was enough to stoke social fears, vilify authorities and weaken the country on the international stage. All of this would allow the country to be governed effectively and freely. I think the system created by its founders themselves slipped out of their control. Through the greed of boors, Poland found itself on the brink of civil war. And civil wars never end. As a society, we allow ourselves to be manipulated very easily. How ignorant must one be to fight with one’s brother over politics and religion?
