Officers of the Customs and Tax Service from the Lower Silesian Customs and Tax Office in Wrocław and the Nadodrze Border Guard Unit in Krosno Odrzańskie were conducting routine checks on the A4 motorway near Legnica. – In the truck selected for inspection, whose driver was transporting an official load, the officers found and secured nearly 7 million cigarettes without Polish excise stamps behind a partition – reports Agnieszka Rzeźnicka-Gniadek, spokesperson for the Lower Silesian KAS.
She explains: – The driver did not have the appropriate documents confirming the origin of the excise goods or their legality.
The seized goods were worth nearly PLN 8.5 million. The driver, a 33-year-old Polish citizen, was charged with handling excise goods obtained illegally. Attempting to smuggle such a quantity of cigarettes carries a sentence of 3 to 10 years in prison and a fine.

Non-custodial preventive measures were applied to the suspect: police supervision, a ban on leaving the country and PLN 50,000 bail. The proceedings are being conducted by the District Prosecutor’s Office in Legnica.
