Winter is the time of year when many bodies of water are covered with a layer of ice. Ice can be extremely deceptive. Its thickness and strength may vary depending on the temperature, weather conditions and the presence of water beneath the surface. Therefore, we warn people not to step onto bodies of water or rivers covered with ice. Ice thickness can vary even within a single body of water.

In recent days, firefighters from Bolesławiec conducted exercises aimed at preparing for rescue operations in the event of people falling through the ice. The Bolesławiec firefighters practised self-rescue techniques, moving across ice and evacuating casualties from the water. During the exercises, specialist equipment was used, including ice sledges, rescue throw lines, ladders and buoyancy suits, which enable effective and safe operations in difficult winter conditions.

Regular exercises of this kind help maintain a high level of operational readiness and provide firefighters with the necessary experience, which may prove crucial during real rescue operations.

Let us remember about safety

Stepping onto the ice always involves risk. Even if it appears stable, changing weather conditions may weaken it. If the ice breaks, call for help immediately by dialling the emergency number 112.
