Posing as a police officer, the scammer informed the victims by telephone that a family member had caused an accident and that, to avoid criminal liability, bail had to be paid on their behalf—in other words, money had to be handed over. In this way, two women from Bolesławiec County were defrauded. As a result of the scammers’ actions, the women lost €130,000 and €50,000, respectively.

Once again, we remind you that, more often than not, a little scepticism and calmly verifying the story described by the caller—by visiting in person or contacting the nearest police station—is enough to expose scammers. It is also important to remember that, during a telephone conversation, you should end the call with the scammer quickly and decisively.

Although many people can recognise attempted scams, criminals still rely on their victims’ naivety, lack of awareness or emotions. Let us remember that every moment spent thinking things over and verifying information can save us from losing money.

Police officers from Lower Silesia remind us that vigilance and common sense are the best tools in the fight against fraud. Scammers are still trying their luck by impersonating our loved ones, but whether their plans succeed depends on us. We appeal for caution, especially in situations involving requests for money transfers.

Let us look out for one another and not be deceived!
