On social media, municipal councillor Urszula Magryś (Civic Coalition) asked the following question:
My dear friends, following a question I was asked about alcohol sales after 10:00 p.m., I am considering whether introducing a ban on alcohol sales in shops after 10:00 p.m. would be justified. This topic arouses many emotions, and I would like to discuss it, considering both the benefits and the potential problems that such a solution could bring.
On the one hand, restricting alcohol sales at night could improve public order and reduce the number of incidents disturbing residents’ peace. In many cities, similar regulations have contributed to improved safety, reduced noise and lower alcohol consumption among young people.
On the other hand, I realise that introducing such a ban could be burdensome for business owners, particularly the owners of small night shops, for whom alcohol sales account for a significant share of their income. It is also necessary to consider whether such a restriction would be regarded as interference with citizens’ freedom of choice, as well as how to enforce such regulations effectively without creating a grey market.
I would like to know your opinion on this matter—do you think such a solution would benefit our community? Is it worth discussing this issue at a meeting of the City Council?
