The incident took place on January 21, 1992, in Zgorzelec. As reported by the CBŚP:
Two masked men, after previously observing the currency exchange office located in the Centrum Department Store on Okrzei Street, fired shots from firearms at the office employees when, after leaving the building, they were heading to their cars with the day’s takings in a leather bag.
One of the men died at the scene, while the perpetrators stole a bag containing approximately 1 billion (!) Polish zlotys at the time and fled the scene.
The bureau adds:
Because of the perpetrators’ brutal methods, the case received extensive media coverage at the time. Despite large-scale procedural and investigative efforts, as well as a monetary reward for information that could help identify and arrest those responsible for the robbery, the investigation conducted by the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office in Jelenia Góra was discontinued on June 26, 1992 — because the perpetrators of the crime could not be identified.
Until now. Investigators: – Information recently obtained by CBŚP officers from Wrocław provided grounds for the Lower Silesian Branch of the Department for Organized Crime and Corruption of the National Prosecutor’s Office in Wrocław to reopen the investigation discontinued in 1992.
Investigators re-examined the case files and carried out a number of procedural activities involving many people. The evidence gathered and the findings made on its basis provided grounds to arrest two people and charge them in connection with the robbery and the murder of Cezary Ł. and the attempted murder of Grzegorz C. in 1992.
Both men are currently in custody, and further procedural activities are being carried out in the case.
