Overlapping illnesses have already postponed Julian’s compulsory education in the first grade three times. His mother is very worried about this situation, especially since this is the last chance for the boy to start walking and functioning independently as much as possible. Most people find it difficult to understand the words Julian says—despite the passage of time, his speech is still very unclear. His mother understands him, but during conversations with his preschool teacher or at speech-therapy sessions at the counselling centre, the ladies ask her to explain what he is saying.
“I have to admit that I do everything I can for my Julek; I fight for him as best I can,” says his mother, Agnieszka. “However, I am slowly running out of strength. The most important things for us now will be genetic testing, taking further doses of medication and continuing our son’s rehabilitation. It makes me sad to think that a large part of Julek’s childhood is connected with hospitals and developing treatment strategies to reconcile all his coexisting illnesses,” his mother adds.
