According to the woman’s account, during the pre-Christmas period fish are offered almost “on every corner”, often in containers that are too small and without the minimum welfare standards that should apply to the trade in live animals.

– It is the busy sales period for live carp in every possible place in the town. The conditions for the fish? Extreme. Today I decided to try to intervene in this matter – the reader writes.

According to the account, the woman tried to contact the Bolesławiec municipal police and the local sanitary inspection, but without success.

Below, we publish the photographs we received, documenting the situation outside one of the Dino supermarkets on Jana Pawła Street in Bolesławiec. The photographs show live carp crammed into cramped containers, raising serious concerns about compliance with animal welfare regulations.

Let us recall that in recent years, increasing attention has been paid to the proper handling of fish—including carp—in order to limit their suffering as much as possible. Animal welfare organisations, as well as some retail chains, have already stopped selling live carp and are promoting alternative solutions.

Unfortunately, as the examples reported by our reader show, there are still places where the welfare of fish does not seem to be a priority. We appeal to all sellers and institutions responsible for inspections to respond to such reports and protect animals from unnecessary stress and suffering.

We will return to the matter. We also ask our readers to send us information and photographs in the event of similar violations.
