Police officer of the Traffic and Prevention Department of the District Police Headquarters in Bolesławiec, Jelenia Góra Voivodeship
He joined the Prevention Department of the District Police Headquarters in Bolesławiec on October 15, 1990.
From 1993, he served as a district officer, and until 1994 he was a police officer in the Traffic and Prevention Department of the District Police Headquarters in Bolesławiec.
From July 1, 1994, to October 16, 1994, he was delegated to temporarily serve at the Warsaw Metropolitan Police Headquarters. He carried out duties directly related to protecting public order and security.
On December 10, 1994, in Bolesławiec, a patrol that included Sergeant Dariusz Chełkowski was sent by the District Police Headquarters duty officer to an area where a man had been beaten. At the scene, during a conversation, the injured man stated that he recognized the perpetrator among three men who were approaching. The police officers proceeded to identify the individuals. They also called another police car for assistance, and it transported the detainees to the District Police Headquarters. The intervening officers and the injured man remained at the scene, waiting for the car to return.
Suddenly, a shot was fired, and the bullet struck Sergeant Dariusz Chełkowski in the back. Despite immediate assistance, the police officer died several hours later in hospital.
The unfortunate shot was fired by a drunk associate of the injured man, who wanted to avenge his beating on the perpetrators. Because of the considerable distance and darkness, he mistakenly identified the standing police officers and the injured man as the perpetrators. The weapon that fatally struck Sergeant Chełkowski was illegally in the perpetrator’s possession.
Sergeant Dariusz Chełkowski left behind a wife and a five-year-old son. He was posthumously awarded the Cross of Merit for Bravery and promoted to the rank of senior sergeant.
