On 21 October 2024, the District Court in Jelenia Góra sentenced a 36-year-old resident of Zgorzelec to 12 years in prison. From 3 to 29 September 2023, in Görlitz and Zgorzelec, he subjected his partner to exceptionally cruel abuse.
The investigation was conducted by the District Prosecutor’s Office in Zgorzelec, which also covered acts committed by the defendant in Germany, namely abusing the victim, depriving her of her liberty and raping her.
– It was established that during the period in question, in Görlitz and Zgorzelec, the perpetrator physically and psychologically abused the victim with exceptional cruelty. He treated her in a humiliating manner, intimidated her and insulted her using words commonly regarded as offensive. He repeatedly punched the victim all over her body and face and pulled her hair – prosecutor Ewa Węglarowicz-Makowska, press spokeswoman for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Jelenia Góra, lists. – As a result of these blows, the woman suffered extensive bruising and abrasions, as well as extensive hair loss and detachment of the subcutaneous tissue from the cranial vault, with hemorrhaging. According to an expert, these injuries impaired the functioning of bodily organs for more than seven days.
Furthermore, materials provided by the German side show that on 15 and 16 September 2023, the perpetrator raped his partner even though he knew she was in her seventh week of pregnancy. The spokeswoman said: – He also deprived her of her liberty by locking her in an apartment in Görlitz on 16 September 2023, without leaving her the keys or a telephone.
On 29 September 2023, the defendant and his partner travelled to Jędrzychowice and checked into a hotel. The following day, the victim died. An expert determined that the cause of her death was acute methamphetamine poisoning.
Prosecutor E. Węglarowicz-Makowska:
The suspect did not admit to committing the offense with which he was charged. He denied having harmed his partner in any way. He stated that he did not know where the injuries on the victim’s body had come from. However, the court did not find him credible.
She added:
The psychiatrists who examined the defendant concluded that he was neither mentally ill nor intellectually disabled and that he was sane at the time of the alleged offense.
The man had no previous convictions. The judgment is not final.
