Archaeological work at the Trinity Tower in Lubań began in mid-October. As reported by eluban.pl: – Archaeologists from the Regional Museum in Lubań planned research that was intended to bring to light the remains of a church built in the Romanesque style and later transformed into a Gothic building.
First, “fragments of foundations of a stone-and-clay wall structure from the 13th century and minor artefacts from the 17th century were discovered – ceramics, ornaments and a ‘little treasure’ found on 24 October, that is, a collection of 17th-century coins.”
The real sensation, however, was yet to come. The Lubań outlet:
On 28 October (...) a copper coffin was excavated, located in the central part of the former church. The coffin was wooden and covered with copper sheeting, while the sarcophagus was a work of Baroque art; its rich decorations and the noble coat of arms painted at the foot of the coffin indicated that an important citizen for the town had been laid to rest inside. Archaeologists carried out examinations that confirmed the discovered remains belonged to the legendary mayor of the town, Johann Winckler.
The Lubań municipal authorities announced that they would arrange a dignified burial for the former town leader. Details at eluban.pl
