The “Istotne Informacje” and mayor’s campaign
The editorial team of the “Istotne Informacje” website and newspaper, together with mayor Piotr Roman, are announcing a competition for the biggest road absurdity in Bolesławiec. Please post photos of such absurdities in the comments below this article. Only photos submitted by registered users will be considered. We will collect photographs until the end of April this year. Then we will hold a vote for the biggest absurdity. The prize in the competition is a book album, “Vademecum of Bolesławiec Ceramics”. Ten people will receive one.
First absurdity
Those who want to enter the Market Square from Kościelna or Sierpnia '80 streets have to violate the mandatory left turn (Kościelna) or right turn (Sierpnia '80). “There are many such absurdities in Bolesławiec,” says mayor Piotr Roman. He adds that the municipal authorities will contact the relevant bodies about the matter.
Second absurdity
For those driving along Asnyka Street toward Sierpnia '80, a new traffic lane has been marked out at the Żwirki i Wigury–Asnyka intersection. The problem is that it was created at the expense of the parking area there. To avoid colliding with parked cars, drivers have to cross a double solid line. “The District Office in Bolesławiec is responsible for traffic organization at this intersection,” Roman explains. “I am not someone who intends to lecture the district governor, but it is precisely the governor who should put this place in order.
Third absurdity
We took up this matter at the request of our Reader. He informed the editorial office that road workers were resurfacing Tysiąclecia Avenue during the thaw. In his opinion, this was pointless, because when the temperature falls below zero, water in the repaired potholes will freeze, break apart the patches and cause potholes to appear there again.
“Special asphalt mixes are used to repair roads in winter; they can be laid in all weather conditions. This is probably the product used in this case. However, snow removal—especially plows scraping away the layer of snow or ice—and freezing in winter mean that many such patches last no more than two months,” says Artur Ferensowicz of Budimex S.A. “Still, it is the only effective way to carry out an emergency road repair in winter conditions.
“The road workers repaired this surface on my orders,” Piotr Roman admits. “I ordered them not to wait until spring and to patch all the larger potholes in the roads immediately. The aim was to prevent anyone from damaging their car’s suspension.
Fourth absurdity
Another absurdity can be found at the intersection of Żwirki i Wigury and Chrobrego streets. During rain, road workers painted the road markings, which after some time were almost completely washed away.
As Roman Palczewski, head of the District Roads Authority in Bolesławiec, informed us, responsibility for this state of affairs lies with the contractor carrying out the project—a company from Legnica. “Nobody told them to paint the road markings while it was raining. They did not agree this with the investor. They were probably afraid that they would have to pay contractual penalties; they wanted to be more papal than the pope,” Palczewski explains. “The company carried out this task in defiance of any logic. They painted over the old markings with black paint and painted new ones. In both cases, the paint came off; the results are obvious to the naked eye.
The company will have to repair the botched work. When? It is not known. Everything depends on the weather conditions (the roads must be dry so that the same situation does not happen again). “Drivers will have to be patient,” adds the head of the District Roads Authority.
