During the 30th Bolesławiec Ceramic Festival, five remarkable drag queens took part in the ceramic parade. Drag queens are high-calibre stage artists. We welcomed them in Bolesławiec during the first Equality March (in October 2023) Bom Bellle. At the second mini march in August, there were:
Drag queen culture originated in Shakespearean theatre. At the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, Shakespearean theatre was enjoying great success. Unfortunately, theatre in those days was subject to moral restrictions, and only men could perform on stage. Therefore, male actors had to dress as women whenever female characters appeared in a play. It is said that the word “drag” itself (from the English words meaning to pull, drag or trail) refers to the trains of the dresses worn by men at the time. The term “drag queen” was first used in New York in the 1920s.
Drag queens and their culture are featured in cult film and theatre productions such as Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and in series such as Queen, starring Andrzej Seweryn and Maria Peszek. TVN broadcast the programme Time for a Show. Drag me out, hosted by singer Mery Spolsky. The American programme RuPaul's Drag Race features the cream of the international drag scene.
