The incident occurred on 1 August in Legnica. Officers from the Patrol and Intervention Department were dispatched by the duty officer to what later turned out to be a dangerous intervention. A man who intended to take his own life was in one of the apartments in Legnica.
When the police officers arrived at the indicated address and began their actions, it became clear that the 37-year-old resident of Legnica, who was experiencing an emotional crisis, had a black-powder firearm with him. The situation became even more dangerous when the officers noticed the man reaching for a revolver hidden at his waist. The officers then had to react in a fraction of a second, as there was a real threat to the lives of both the police officers themselves and the 37-year-old man they were intervening with.
The officers rushed at the would-be suicide victim and took the weapon away from him. They then successfully restrained him. The revolver was loaded and ready to fire; these were seconds that determined whether a human life would be saved.
Thanks to the officers’ swift reaction, composure and exemplary intervention, tragedy was avoided.
An ambulance was called to the scene. Ultimately, the resident of Legnica was placed in the care of specialist doctors. The officers, meanwhile, will determine how the man acquired the firearm and ammunition.
