On 11 May, the Legnica District Police Headquarters received a report concerning the theft of brass elements from several dozen graves at the Municipal Cemetery in Legnica. – Police officers from the Property Crime Unit of the Legnica Municipal Police Headquarters immediately began working to identify the perpetrators – reports Senior Aspirant Łukasz Porębski from the Press Section of the Lower Silesian Provincial Police Headquarters in Wrocław.

And he adds: – As a result of the officers’ intensive work, they identified and, as early as Monday, 13 May, arrested three people in connection with the case: a 40-year-old woman and two men aged 39 and 21.

During searches of the residential premises used by the arrested individuals, police officers discovered a bag containing partially damaged brass crosses and figurines weighing 6 kg in total. In addition, the officers’ thorough work led them to a scrap metal collection point, where the remainder of the previously stolen property was found.

While carrying out official activities at the scrap metal collection point, the officers secured a total of 34 kg of brass elements.

He adds: – The investigation files show that the arrested individuals had recently been performing community service at the cemetery as part of a sentence restricting their freedom. All circumstances of the incident are currently being clarified, and the arrested individuals will soon be charged with theft and desecration of a burial site.

Losses suffered by the victims amount to more than PLN 10,000. Around 100 graves were damaged.

All three face up to 5 years in prison.
