The discovery of the family grave took place on March 12, 2024. At that time, people from Pracownia Badań Historycznych i Archeologicznych Pomost were carrying out exhumation work on Piątnicka Street in Legnica (Lower Silesian Voivodeship). It was the courtyard of one of the rural buildings that formerly belonged to the independent village of Piątnica/Pfaffendorf Kreis Liegnitz.

As we read on the workshop's Facebook profile:

At the location indicated by witnesses, we discovered the grave of three people—a German family who died in 1945 as a result of what is known as extended suicide. The remains found belonged to two women and one man. We documented gunshot wounds in the victims' skulls. In addition, in the burial pit we also recorded relics of a wooden door that had apparently been used to cover the buried bodies.

We would like to sincerely thank the members of Stowarzyszenie Tiliae, Muzeum Miedzi w Legnicy, and the property owners for their help in locating the grave and reconstructing its history.
