As we can read in the Calendar for the Whole Family That Wants to Break Free, the Catholic tradition of commemorating the dead probably has its roots in pagan customs. Initially, the holiday was held on a different date, in May, and was moved to November 1 in Rome. The change probably took place under the influence of the Anglo-Saxons and Franks, who held such celebrations in autumn. Among them, ceremonies known as sollemnitas sanctissima (Latin: the solemnity of the holiest) were held. The Germanic peoples and Celts organized autumn ceremonies in honor of the dead known as Samhain. In 835, Pope Gregory IV appealed to Emperor Louis the Pious to introduce compulsory November 1 celebrations throughout the empire.
