Clödie will perform in Bolesławiec as the headline act of the World Suicide Prevention Day observances. Klaudia Trzepizur (Clödie) was a contestant in the fourth edition of “The Voice of Poland.” Clödie is a charismatic artist with a raspy, distinctive voice who performs pop-rock music. Her acoustic rendition of The Cranberries’ worldwide hit “Zombie” brought her popularity both in Poland and abroad; on YouTube, it has already received more than 35 million views and thousands of favorable comments from around the world. During Clödie’s concert, a symbolic wall of stigma will be built and demolished at the end of the final concert.
Each year in our country, around 5,000 people take their own lives, and an increasing proportion of this group is made up of young people and children. According to the Polish Suicidology Association, twice as many people die by suicide each year in Poland as in car accidents. In Poland, approximately 200 LGBT+ teenagers attempt suicide every year, 25 of whom lose their lives (data from the report “The Social Situation of LGBT+ People in Poland 2019–2020” by Kampania Przeciw Homofobii and Lambda Warszawa). If we compare this with the estimated number of LGBT+ teenagers (according to Dalia Research, 2016, LGBT people make up 4.9% of Polish society) and the ratio of suicide attempts among teenagers to deaths resulting from them (the average for 2017–2020 was 13%, according to Police data), we see the devastating toll of homophobia and transphobia in Poland.
That is why Wojewódzki Szpital dla Nerwowo i Psychicznie Chorych w Bolesławcu is taking the initiative to promote preventive and educational activities aimed at increasing public awareness of the issue of suicide. Hospital staff are reaching out to those who need help from the Bolesławiec Mental Health Center for adults, children and young people, whose mission is to develop community-based psychiatry. The event program is available at szpitalpsychiatryczny.pl.
