Piotrek is 30 years old. Just four weeks ago, we learned that he had been seriously injured in an accident that could have taken him from us forever. All it took was one unfortunate jump into the water and one phone call from the hospital to turn our lives upside down.
Until then, he had always been a cheerful, smiling man. He completed a degree in logistics, worked, and enjoyed skiing, traveling and sightseeing. And the day after the accident, we heard him say that he did not know whether the operation made sense...
An injury to the cervical spine resulted in damage to the spinal cord and weakness in the upper and lower limbs. He also nearly drowned, which caused acute respiratory failure.
After being admitted to hospital, Piotrek underwent immediate surgery. To this day, he remains in the intensive care unit, where he breathes with the help of a ventilator. His diaphragm is not functioning properly. He speaks in a whisper, but can be understood; he moves his shoulders slightly, while his hands remain limp. He can feel touch on his hands, but has no feeling in his legs at all...
To restore at least some of his mobility, he needs expensive rehabilitation that is not covered by reimbursement. We were referred to a Rehabilitation Center in Kraków, where doctors give Piotrek hope of becoming independent. That is why we will do everything we can to help him return to his former life.
And adds:
The costs of rehabilitation, the treatment stay and residence at a specialist facility are enormous, but we believe that with your help our Piotrek will finally be able to breathe independently and regain his motor skills. That is why we are asking you for help. Your support, donation, sharing or kind words could make this one moment that could have taken away what is most precious from him remain only a bad memory, and one day Piotrek may be able to take a deep breath on his own.
