On the website of the Warta Bolesławiecka municipality, the Lubków Municipal Services Company published an appeal. The letter reads:

Dear Sir or Madam,
In connection with the recent sewer failures in our municipality, the Lubków Municipal Services Company Sp. z o.o. reminds residents that flushing reusable, wet or viscose-and-polyester tissues, as well as paper towels and other hygiene materials—except toilet paper—down the toilet is prohibited.

The company emphasizes:

After use, such hygiene materials should be disposed of with mixed waste (the black bin). These materials do not break down in water and cause persistent blockages in sewer pipes; when they reach a wastewater pumping station, they damage the pumps. Let us remember! The sewer system is not a trash bin. Its primary task is to carry domestic wastewater to a treatment plant. When the sewer system becomes blocked, streets and yards, and even lower-lying rooms, are very often flooded with wastewater.

It also reminds residents that:

(…) under the Act of 7 June 2001 on collective water supply and collective wastewater discharge (...) it is prohibited to introduce the following into sewerage facilities:

  1. solid waste that may reduce the capacity of sewer pipes, in particular gravel, sand, ash, glass, pomace, yeast, bristles, leather trimmings, textiles and fibres, even if they are shredded;
  2. liquid waste that does not mix with water, in particular synthetic resins, varnishes, bituminous masses, tars and their emulsions, and cement mixtures;
  3. flammable and explosive substances with a flash point below 85°C, in particular petrol, kerosene, heating oil, carbide and trinitrotoluene;
  4. corrosive and toxic substances, in particular strong acids and bases, formalin, sulphides, cyanides, and solutions of ammonia, hydrogen sulphide and hydrogen cyanide;
  5. waste and wastewater from animal farming, in particular liquid manure, slurry, farmyard manure and wastewater from silage;
  6. wastewater containing pathogenic microorganisms originating from (…).

It also warns:

Introducing this wastewater into the sewer system may result in a penalty of restriction of liberty or a fine of up to PLN 10,000.

Let us take care of the sewer system. Let us not flush hygiene materials down toilets!
