Police officers from the Independent Police Prevention Subunit in Legnica went to one of the city’s streets, where a highly agitated man was reportedly present. It turned out that several hours earlier, the 35-year-old had stormed into a church carrying a knife, with which he damaged the wall of the church and also tore out fire-extinguisher brackets. The officers detained the Legnica resident and placed him in a police cell.

During the officers’ activities, it emerged that the 35-year-old had several other crimes to his name, committed in two churches in Legnica. Based on the evidence gathered, police officers from the Department for Combating Property Crime brought a total of four charges against the man: two break-ins into church collection boxes for donations and theft of the money from them, attempted break-in into a collection box, and property damage. Through his conduct, the 35-year-old showed blatant disregard for the legal order, and his acts were hooligan in nature. The man confessed to the acts of which he was accused.

At the request of the prosecutor’s office and police officers, the District Court in Legnica applied a preventive measure against the suspect in the form of pre-trial detention for a period of two months.

The 35-year-old will now answer for his offenses before the court and could face up to 10 years in prison.
