The incident occurred early Sunday morning at a former quarry in Raciborowice Dolne. Before 9:00 a.m., firefighters received a report that a woman and her one-year-old child might be in the flooded excavation. We unofficially learned that the husband reported that the woman had “gone swimming.” A rescue team from Bolesławiec was sent to the scene.
– During the night, the husband received an SMS from his partner saying that she was going swimming with their child at Kamionka. No report was made to any services at that time. It was only this morning, around 9:00 a.m., that the woman’s husband called – says trainee Damian Ludziak from the Bolesławiec Fire Service.
– The woman’s body was spotted first, followed by the child’s. A rescuer entered the water. The child was closer to the shore, and the body was pulled out. Resuscitation efforts were begun. After the emergency medical team arrived, we handed over the child and the woman, who had been brought out of the water by then – says brig. Piotr Pilarczyk, deputy district fire commander in Bolesławiec.
– The boy was about 4 metres from the shore, and the woman about 5–6 metres away. But we could not reach her because the water was very deep. While still in the water, we began resuscitation efforts on the child. We cleared the airway and gave several rescue breaths. The child was handed over to the emergency medical team. After assessing the patient and performing an ECG, the team discontinued resuscitation efforts. The same was true in the woman’s case. We also performed resuscitation because that is our procedure – adds trainee Damian Ludziak.
The woman’s husband was not at the scene of the tragedy during the resuscitation efforts. He returned home to their other child.
The prosecutor’s office is conducting the investigation.
