Eighty-six officers from across the country were honoured with the Andrzej Struj Police Sub-Commissioner Badge. As many as 24 police officers from the Lower Silesian garrison were among them. The ceremony at the Ministry of the Interior and Administration was attended, among others, by Minister Mariusz Kamiński and Chief of Police Inspector General Jarosław Szymczyk.
Among the honoured officers from Lower Silesia were two officers from the County Police Headquarters in Bolesławiec:
- post. Dariusz Herdzik – County Police Headquarters in Bolesławiec,
- sergeant Wojciech Szuter – County Police Headquarters in Bolesławiec.
The Provincial Police Headquarters in Wrocław:
Officers from Bolesławiec County evacuated an elderly couple from a burning building. The seniors did not know that flames were spreading above their heads. The woman left under her own power, while the 86-year-old man was carried out by the police officers. No one was injured, and the fire was brought under control.
Our police officers will receive the honours at a later date.

The Andrzej Struj Police Sub-Commissioner Badge is awarded at the request of the Chief of Police or on the initiative of the Minister of the Interior and Administration. (The distinction may also be awarded posthumously.) It may be awarded to police officers who, outside their service, undertook to save human life, health or property while risking their own life or health, or who, during their service, undertook to save human life while exposing their own life or health to particular danger. The officers also receive a financial award.
Andrzej Struj died from stab wounds after, on 10 February 2010, while on leave, he intervened against hooligans who were vandalising a tram. The police officer had served in the force for 15 years. He worked in the Intelligence and Patrol Department of the Warsaw Metropolitan Police Headquarters. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Police Sub-Commissioner and awarded the Cross of Merit for Bravery by President of the Republic of Poland Lech Kaczyński, as well as the Gold “Meritorious Police Officer” Badge by the Minister of the Interior and Administration.
Let us recall. The incident occurred on 22 January. Officers from the Police Station in Nowogrodziec, while patrolling the municipal area, noticed clouds of smoke rising above one of the houses. They immediately went to the scene to determine the cause and whether the residents were in danger.

The officers:
As they approached the buildings, they saw that one of the houses was on fire on the first floor, so they immediately notified the duty officer and entered. On the ground floor, elderly people were sleeping in one of the rooms. The couple were surprised to see the police officers because they were unaware that flames were spreading above their heads.
They added:
The police officers helped the seniors leave the building safely. They led the 82-year-old woman out and carried the ill 86-year-old man from the burning house. Once the officers had made sure that no one else’s life was in danger, they closed the windows and shut off the gas.
Firefighters then arrived at the scene and began extinguishing the fire, eliminating the danger.
Volunteer firefighters from Nowogrodziec reported:
(...) at 3:12 p.m. we responded to a residential building fire in Zebrzydowa.
They added:
The rooms were searched; textiles, newspapers and a washing machine were burning in one of the rooms. A single water jet was immediately applied, extinguishing the fire. The wooden floor was dismantled to rule out hidden sources of fire.
