Wałbrzych Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centre:
We appeal to people to donate blood every day and during the holidays. Blood is a scarce medicine that saves lives; it cannot be replaced with anything or bought at a pharmacy. Its only source is healthy people. Help is possible only thanks to blood donors.
Blood is particularly needed now. The Christmas and New Year period is a difficult time for blood donation in Wałbrzych, as well as for patients waiting for treatment with blood and its components. During this period, hospitals see increased demand for this life-giving fluid. Patients are waiting for transfusions, procedures and complex operations during which blood is essential. Every drop is therefore worth its weight in gold.
Blood of every group is needed, and stock reserves are declining day by day. It should be emphasised that red blood cell concentrate—the blood component currently most commonly used in treatment—has a shelf life of only 42 days.
The Centre stresses:
Donating blood is a painless process and safe for your health. Just one hour at a blood donation centre, including registration, can help save a human life. The 450 ml of blood collected in one donation can save as many as three people.
Who can be a blood donor?
A person who:
- is aged 18–65
- weighs at least 50 kg
- is in very good health
- has a valid photo ID
- is rested, well slept and has eaten a healthy, low-fat meal.
The facility adds: – Remember that as early as the day before donating blood, you should drink about two litres of fluids and eat a healthy, low-fat meal.
Blood can also be donated in Bolesławiec, at the Provincial Hospital for the Nervously and Mentally Ill, al. Tysiąclecia. The calendar of organised blood donation drives is available on the www.rckik.walbrzych.pl.
