On Thursday, June 10, at the Miejska Biblioteka Publiczna there will be a meeting with Wojciech Widłak, a well-known author of children’s books and creator of the popular Pan Kuleczka. The writer studied Persian and wanted to become a diplomat, but—as he says—fortunately for himself and for Poland’s national interest, he became someone else.

He wrote reportage from hospitals in communist Poland, helped people addicted to alcohol, and co-created the periodical “Karta.” Together with the well-known illustrator Elżbieta Wasiuczyńska he conjured up Pan Kuleczka and his charges: the reflective Dog Pypeć, the neurotic Duck Katastrofa, and the taciturn fly Bzyk-Bzyk. For more than five years, Widłak described their adventures in the magazine “Dziecko.” Then—to the delight of many readers—the story’s characters moved into several books. Both children and their parents, and even critics, fell in love with Pan Kuleczka.

Wojciech Widłak is also the author of “The Secret Life of Gnomes in Great Hats” and “Bedtime Stories,” as well as the “Handy Incompetence Guide of Professor Kurzawka & Assistant Kwasek” series.

The event, part of the “Bolesławieckie Biblionalia” series, was co-financed under a program of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. It begins at 8:30.
