We present another interesting story from the Klekusiowo Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre in Tomaszów Bolesławiecki. Its protagonist is a young stork that, after rehabilitation, was released into the wild in spring 2022. Imagine everyone’s surprise when, instead of flying to warmer countries, the stork returned to the centre.
As we read on Klekusiowo’s profile:
(...) In August last year, a young stork came to our centre. It was dehydrated and emaciated. It needed care, raising and additional feeding. It quickly regained its strength and grew up. It stayed with us until spring. Then it left its shelter and began its adult life. It would seem to be an ordinary story. But this one has a continuation.
This fellow, instead of flying south like the other storks this year, flew to Klekusiowo. The guy thought, why put himself through a long journey when he has everything he needs here? Food, shelter and care. It seems that for some storks Klekusiowo has become a migration destination. And the centre itself has become their holiday destination. So we have our first holidaymaker. And what about Kropeczka and Kleks? Well... they are still here.
P.S. This post is humorous. But we realise that these are significant changes in the lives of storks. Why is this happening? There are theories that climate change is the reason why storks are staying in Poland and elsewhere. Winters are getting warmer, which means greater access to food. One consequence of these changes is also the expansion of the Sahara. Birds have to travel greater distances in search of food without access to drinking water. The danger of young birds dying is increasing, which is why it is becoming worthwhile for birds to try overwintering where they are. They are safe with us, because together with you we will take care of them.
