As the fundraising organizers report:

Our son Janio was born on January 24, 2019. At 10 weeks of age, before his first vaccination, Jasio was admitted to a hospital ward in Wrocław because of persistent jaundice and abnormal laboratory results. After two weeks of numerous tests, the doctors at the ward exhausted the possibilities for further diagnosis, so our son was transferred to the Children’s Memorial Health Institute in Warsaw with suspected progressive intrahepatic cholestasis and suspected PFIC 3. During his hospitalization at CZD, genetic material was collected to test for Alagille syndrome and PFIC 3—we received the results a year later; they were negative. A liver biopsy was scheduled, which showed cirrhosis.

In addition, our son suffers from severe itchy skin caused by very high bile acid levels, which wakes him at night. A cardiac examination found a systolic murmur over the heart and PFO, so we remain under specialist supervision. While he was on the ward, a liver elastography examination was scheduled; it showed significantly increased liver stiffness. A biopsy was performed—the organ’s architecture was completely disrupted, indicating liver fibrosis. The disease is progressing, although doctors have been unable to determine the cause of the liver cirrhosis and describe it as a “rare case.” Everything remained relatively stable despite such elevated results: medications, specialist check-ups and further tests. Everything was fine until April 2022, when Jaś began bleeding at night and we were urgently transported by plane to CZD near Warsaw.

His laboratory results deteriorated severely, and a blood transfusion was necessary throughout the medical transport. After a few days at CZD, Jania’s condition was stabilized and a gastroscopy could be performed, which revealed a grade II esophageal varix. A band was placed and the bleeding stopped. The liver fibrosis is already so severe that it causes varices, which are life-threatening for Janio. During his stay at CZD, Jaś underwent oral sanitation, and it was necessary to remove three teeth that could have caused inflammation, which would pose a risk during transplantation.

And they conclude:

Although doctors do not know the cause of the liver cirrhosis, examinations for liver-transplant classification have begun. On May 20, 2022, our son was placed on the waiting list for a liver transplant. The doctors are initially planning the transplant for late autumn, unless his condition suddenly worsens, in which case everything will be expedited. We already know that Jasio’s father may donate a portion of his liver.

Frequent visits to doctors, trips to the hospital, paid examinations, a supplementary platelet prosthesis and medications that are not reimbursed and are very expensive—this is why we are asking for support for our son, so that he can overcome his illness with a smile.
