The incident occurred on Tuesday, 18 May. At around 3:00 p.m., officers from the Bolesławiec traffic police received a report that a car stolen on 11 May of this year was travelling along national road 94. At kilometre 18 of road 94, Bolesławiec police officers spotted a Mercedes travelling without its lights on. The officers gave the driver a clear signal to stop. When he saw the police, the man driving the car accelerated and began to flee. The officers gave chase.
The Mercedes driver headed towards Lubań. The man violated more than a dozen traffic regulations. At times, he was travelling at over 160 km/h. While driving through Lubań, he ignored road signs, drove against the traffic and mounted pavements. He then drove through Bolesławiec, where he managed to get past a police roadblock, and several villages near Bolesławiec.
The traffic offender was caught only in Zebrzydowa, at a railway crossing (a train happened to be passing, so the fleeing driver had to stop). Police established that the car was being driven by a 22-year-old resident of Lubań County who did not have a driving licence. What is more, he was probably under the influence of drugs.
It turned out that the 22-year-old was fleeing from the police in a car he had stolen from his own grandfather. The traffic offender now faces up to 10 years in prison.
