Bon Gelati almond ice cream is sold in both German and Polish Lidl supermarkets. We compared its price. At the Polish Lidl in Bolesławiec, it cost PLN 14.38 on July 6 (and, as the seller reports, was additionally subject to a zero VAT rate). At the German Lidl in central Berlin, the same ice cream cost €1.99 on July 9 (according to the NBP exchange rate from Friday, one euro was worth PLN 4.7958), or PLN 9.54. That is over 33% cheaper!
Overall, sweets have always been cheaper at our western neighbours'. But for prices to differ by as much as one-third?
Recently, Jarosław Kaczyński of Law and Justice, the party currently governing Poland, said that the true value of the euro is 3 zlotys. Using that conversion rate, the ice cream in Berlin costs just under PLN 6, or as much as 58% less than in our country.
What do you think accounts for such price differences at the same chain?
