At the Conference Centre of the Ministry of National Defence, the President of the Republic of Poland and supreme commander of the armed forces Andrzej Duda and the Minister of National Defence Mariusz Błaszczak took part in an accountability and coordination briefing for the management staff of the Ministry of National Defence and the Polish Armed Forces.
Head of the ministry:
(…) the meeting is an excellent opportunity to sum up the last two years of the Ministry of National Defence’s activities and present plans for the further development of the Polish Armed Forces. During the previous accountability and coordination briefing, held three years ago, none of us expected that the security environment, not only in the region but also around the world, would change so much. The coronavirus pandemic, the hybrid attack on Poland by the Lukashenko regime and, above all, Russia’s criminal attack on Ukraine further convinced us of the vital and absolutely fundamental role played by the armed forces in the security system. The COVID-19 epidemic made the Polish Army a key element of the state’s crisis-response system. The ongoing hybrid attack from Belarus showed that the Polish Army is capable of carrying out almost all, even the most unexpected, tasks.
He added: – Poland needs a large, well-equipped, modern army, above all capable of independently defending our borders.
Ministry officials emphasize that the Homeland Defence Act – adopted with the support of President A. Duda and Jarosław Kaczyński – created new opportunities for the development and expansion of the potential of the Polish Armed Forces.
Mariusz Błaszczak listed the following:
The army must be equipped with modern equipment, which is why we are consistently modernizing and replacing the weaponry used by our soldiers. We have launched the next phase of the Wisła program, involving deliveries of a medium-range air-defence system. We will purchase six more batteries of this system. We will also order 500 launchers of the Himars system, which is capable of striking targets at a distance of up to 300 kilometers.
The war in Ukraine showed how important artillery is, which is why Poland must become an artillery power. We will also buy proven equipment manufactured in Korea, including infantry fighting vehicles that will complement the domestically produced BWP Borsuk, howitzers and K2 tanks.
In the near future, we will sign contracts for deliveries including mine destroyers, remotely controlled ZSSW turret systems integrated with Rosomak vehicles, AW149 multirole support helicopters, two reconnaissance satellites and tank destroyers.
He also emphasized: – Ensuring Poland’s security is the fundamental task of both the President Andrzej Duda and me.
