In such situations, unfortunately, we take shortcuts and reach for calorie-dense snacks and ready-made meals, which do not support the development of healthy eating habits. How can you eat healthily and enjoyably without spending several hours in the kitchen?
Meal Planning
Let us imagine the following hypothetical situation: we return home tired after work, we are hungry, we open the refrigerator, and find nothing inside. Of course, we want to eat healthily, so we consider going to the store, but eventually tiredness wins, and we reach for the phone to order… pizza, kebab or a burger. Sound familiar? There is nothing wrong with this if it happens to us once in a while, but if this is a scenario we repeat almost every day, it is worth taking appropriate steps. What kind? To begin with, planning meals for the entire week is a good idea. First, let us think about what we feel like eating while also being realistic about what we can manage—if we are busy, we should not choose time-consuming dishes. Then, all we need to do is make a list of the healthy meals we want to prepare and go shopping for the necessary groceries.
Diet Catering
If cooking is not our strong suit but we want to eat healthily and enjoyably, a meal-box diet is a good choice and a very convenient solution. All we need to do is choose one of the many diet catering services available on the market, specify our diet type, define our calorie requirements, complete a few formalities and wait for delicious meals to appear at our door. A meal-box diet is a great option for people with food intolerances—thanks to it, we do not have to wonder whether a given meal contains a “harmful” ingredient or whether it is safe for us.
Healthy Snacks Within Easy Reach
Hunger is definitely the worst “advisor”—it is precisely under its influence that we most often reach for unhealthy snacks. To prevent this, it is worth always keeping healthy alternatives close at hand. These can include fruit, nuts or dates. They can be bought even before work or during a lunch break. Natural yogurts are also a great choice; they can be eaten with fruit, along with vegetables and hummus, as well as fresh, one-day juices—fruit juices, or even better, fruit-and-vegetable or vegetable juices. If we absolutely must eat something sweet, we can occasionally treat ourselves to an oat bar.
Ready-Made Meals
Hunger is not the only bad advisor; lack of time is another reason why we most often reach for ready-made meals, available in almost every grocery store. If we decide to eat popular “ready meals,” it is good practice to read their ingredients before they end up on our plates. There is certainly no need to demonize them—there are plenty of interesting and healthy options on the market, such as ready-made grains with dried vegetables, which only need to be covered with water, or cream soups that simply need to be heated.
Ordering Takeaway Meals
A good alternative—although considerably more expensive than popular “ready meals” and diet catering—is ordering meals from a restaurant. Some establishments even offer weekly or monthly subscriptions, which can sometimes make our lives considerably easier. If we do not want to use them, however, it is worth making a list of “trusted” restaurants that we know serve healthy and balanced meals and use high-quality ingredients. When hunger strikes, we will instinctively choose a good option instead of fast food, which should be avoided if we want to develop healthy eating habits.
