During the latest session of the Bolesławiec City Council, held on 30 March, a question was raised about civil defence and the inventory of shelters in the city. Renata Szewczyk, Piotr Roman’s deputy, said that the head of civil defence is the Mayor of Bolesławiec. She added:

According to the documents and the actual situation, since the end of the Second World War there have been no shelters in Bolesławiec—meaning facilities that, in accordance with the regulations, can be said to meet all the criteria for shelters.

However, she immediately pointed out that the City of Ceramics has designated refuge areas listed in the records. (These are basements in residential, multi-family buildings.) She assured those present:

In view of what has happened in Ukraine, the head of civil defence—that is, the Mayor of Bolesławiec—has taken steps to determine and increase the number of refuge areas.

She also added that more detailed information would be provided at a later date.

The discussion was joined by Zdzisław Abramowicz, a councillor from the Bezpartyjni i Ziemia Bolesławiecka club, as well as a history enthusiast, an expert on the history of Bolesławiec and the surrounding area, a columnist, and a co-author of books about our region. The councillor stressed that in the past, shelters were provided not only by basements but also by air-raid trenches located in the city parks. Unfortunately, these facilities have been dismantled.
