Wikipedia:

Valentine’s Day (Polish: Walentynki) is an annual celebration for lovers, observed on 14 February. The name comes from Saint Valentine, whose liturgical memorial is also celebrated on this day in the Catholic Church.

The custom on this day is to send letters containing declarations of love, often written in verse. In the West, especially in Great Britain and the United States, Saint Valentine was venerated as the patron saint of lovers. 14 February thus became an occasion for exchanging small gifts.
