On Monday, February 1, during checks of passengers travelling to Brussels, Border Guard officers from Wrocław-Strachowice arrested a 48-year-old Polish man who was wanted under a European Arrest Warrant issued by the German authorities. The officers explain:
The reason for the search was his detention for the purpose of surrender or extradition.
What was the Polish man wanted for by the German justice system?
The man had committed fraud on sales websites. “As the German side reported, he offered various items for sale, collected payment for them, but never sent the goods,” says Border Guard Major Joanna Konieczniak, press spokeswoman for the Nadodrzański Border Guard Unit. “In this way, he defrauded 75 people.”
The 48-year-old was handed over to the Wrocław police.
The European Arrest Warrant has been used since 2004. It replaced the lengthy extradition procedures previously used by Member States. An EAW is issued following simplified cross-border judicial proceedings. Such a warrant, issued by the judicial authorities of one of the Member States, is valid throughout the territory of the European Union.
