The government is trying to combat inflation in various ways. One of them is a zero VAT rate on food products, which until now had been subject to a 5% tax. From February 1, when doing grocery shopping, we should notice lower prices for bread, meat, fish, dairy products, vegetables, fruit and some beverages.
According to economists, the VAT reduction on food should translate into monthly grocery savings of around PLN 50 for a family of 3–4. The problem, however, is that before the VAT reduction on food took effect, some stores had already managed to raise prices by as much as several dozen percent.
Therefore, the current 5% reduction may go unnoticed by customers. In the case of bread, the reduction ranges from a few groszy on a kaiser roll to several dozen groszy on a loaf. In the case of butter, the reduction per pack will amount to several dozen groszy.
And what do our readers think about the reductions? We encourage you to vote in the poll.
