Redevelopment of the Pückler palace at Zgorzelecka Street is underway. The building once housed the headquarters of the District Complex of Schools and Special Institutions in Bolesławiec. The Bolesławiec Museum of Ceramics will soon “move into” the building. The investment is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2023. Whether this deadline will be met due to the COVID-19 pandemic remains to be seen.
How are the works progressing?
The renovation is highly advanced. Since the palace was rebuilt in several phases, including during the post-war period, there have unfortunately been some unpleasant surprises. During the demolition work, concerns previously raised by architects were confirmed. Problems were uncovered with the foundations, with part of the building having to be shored up, as well as with the roof structure, whose elements had rotted.
All this makes the investment quite a challenge for builders, engineers and architects alike.
Nevertheless, the work is proceeding at full speed. A very positive surprise for the museum staff has been that it is already clear that the renovated building really is a palace. And that it has truly remarkable potential.
Will all the collections of the Museum of Ceramics in Bolesławiec fit in the Pückler palace?
Since the institution currently has the world’s largest collection of Bolesławiec ceramics, that would be extremely difficult. So how will this problem be solved? The plan is to display certain exhibits in rotation at the palace.
What will happen to the museum building on Mickiewicza Street?
A so-called study storage facility will be established there. In this way, the Bolesławiec museum wants to follow the example of many similar institutions around the world that make their storage facilities accessible to visitors. Visiting these facilities is genuinely very popular.
When will it be possible to attend Museum Night at the Pückler palace?
Probably not until 2024.
We will certainly return to this subject.
