What is a terminal block?

A terminal block consists of brass contacts. It is used to connect and secure wires and installation components, e.g. in junction boxes, control cabinets or electrical distribution boards. Their use facilitates installation and removal, which is very useful during service work. In addition, a terminal block allows several items to be connected while maintaining the proper flow of electricity.

A terminal block is a practical product with many advantages. It is inexpensive and easy to install, saves you time, reduces the space occupied by wires and ensures the safety of household members or customers.

There are several types of terminal blocks on the market, differing, among other things, in thickness and construction. The most common terminal blocks have the following dimensions: 2.5 mm, 3.5 mm, 3.81 mm, 5 mm and 5.08 mm.

Disconnectable terminal block

One of the most popular products that provides functionality and safety is a terminal block with disconnectable connections, characterized by a body that connects two or more wires. As the name suggests, this connection can be disconnected, making terminal blocks easy to use when repairing and servicing devices.

Terminal block parameters

If you want to know what type of wires you can install in your terminal block, pay attention to several basic parameters. The most important is the rated current. Its value is determined based on the conductivity of the connection terminals, the area of their cross-section and the permissible temperature increase.

A good guideline is that the terminal block should be designed to carry approximately 150% of the maximum current drawn by the connected equipment. If the terminal block carries a current that is too high, there is a high probability that the equipment will be damaged.

Another factor is the size and type of wire installed in the connector. Terminal blocks vary and may be designed for solid-core or stranded wires. The thickness of the wire is also important, as it may simply not fit a particular terminal block.

The final factors are the number of poles and the pitch, that is, the distance between them.
